International United Nations Peacekeepers Day
International United Nations Peacekeepers Day, observed on 29 May and dedicated to all personnel serving in peacekeeping missions, particularly those who lost their lives while safeguarding peace around the world, was marked through a series of activities organized by the Serbian Armed Forces.
A photography exhibition was opened at the Central Military Club in Belgrade, showcasing the participation of the Serbian Armed Forces in United Nations peacekeeping missions from 1956 to the present day. In the village of Zagužanje near Surdulica, a delegation of the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath at the grave of Lieutenant Colonel Dejan Stanojević, who lost his life in 2022 while on duty in the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The event provided an opportunity to review the rich history of Serbian Armed Forces’ participation in UN peacekeeping operations, to pay tribute to all soldiers, commanders, and civilians who have served in peacekeeping operations worldwide, and to highlight the professionalism, expertise, and readiness of Serbian Armed Forces personnel in the execution of assigned tasks as part of the international peacekeeping force.
Through their participation in peacekeeping operations, the Serbian Armed Forces contribute to the building and preservation of peace worldwide, while at the same time demonstrating their professionalism and capability to deploy forces and resources internationally. In addition to enhancing operational capabilities and interoperability, these missions also contribute to the development of international cooperation and the strengthening of Serbia’s reputation.Currently, members of the Serbian Armed Forces are deployed in four UN peacekeeping operations, four EU operations, as well as in the Multinational Force and Observers mission in the Sinai Peninsula.
