For participation of Serbia in EU missions

Serbian Defence Minister Dragan Sutanovac have said in Brussels today that Serbia in the future wishes also to join the European security policy, and in addition to the UN-led peacekeeping missions to participate in those organized by the EU.

"This is the way for all the countries participants in Partnership for Peace and the EU candidate countries", Sutanovac said to FoNet during the break at the Roundtable "Situation in Europe – difficult issues for the EU".

Sutanovac pointed out that this is the way for Serbia to draw benefits, not only in the field of defence, but also for its further convergence to the EU.

On the occasion of the roundtable, he estimated that the fact that Serbia is the only country from the entire region of Southeast Europe which has been invited to the gathering and that its voice has been listened closely, speaks about great interest of Europe.

"This is a great conference not only focused on problems but also on future solutions in the development of Europe", Sutanovac said, adding that the Serbian delegation convinced their counterparts that the way to the EU is the only way for Serbia, with no alternative.

Sutanovac also talked with the top EU officials, which he found very important, since today, in Brussels, important meetings of the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have been held regarding the future of the region within the EU.

At those meetings, Clinton represented, in some way, the interests of Serbia for its soonest possible convergence and accession to the EU membership.

On the sidelines of the conference Minister Sutanovac also met with the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy.

Tonight, at the European Parliament in Brussels, Minister Sutanovac has also spoken with the members of the "Friendship with Serbia" Group.

On Friday, Sutanovac is going to talk with the Chairman of the EU Military Committee, General Hakan Suren, as well as with a number of ambassadors of the European countries to NATO.
