Southeast Europe Defence Ministerial – SEDM Conference



State Secretary Dusan Spasojevic, leads a delegation of the Ministry of Defence at the Southeast Europe Defence Ministerial – SEDM Conference, which is being held in Tirana from 11 to 12 October.

The main topics of discussion of this year's conference are considering the initiatives to date which have developed through the mechanisms of cooperation within the SEDM and proposals for the new ways of cooperation.

Addressing the participants in the Conference, Spasojevic pointed out that what is encouraging is the fact that there is high awareness in the region that the security is an indivisible whole, that it is characterized by interdependence and that only through regional cooperation, and such initiatives as SEDM is it is possible to draw benefit for the individual states and their citizens.

Our determination is not only to participate, but to initiate and implement, together with SEDM members, various forms of cooperation that will contribute to the strengthening of the regional security, as well as developing and strengthening confidence-building measures in the region of South Eastern Europe.

During the Conference, Spasojevic held a series of bilateral meetings and on this occasion met with Ukrainian Defence Minister, Michael Yezhel, Defence Minister of Albania Arben Imami, Defence Minister of Turkey Mehmet Gonul, Minister of Defence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Selma Cikotic, Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs Alexander Vershbow, Deputy Minister of Defence of the Republic of Bulgaria, Augustin Cvetkov, and Commander of NATO Joint Forces, Naples, Admiral Samuel Locklear. The topics of the meetings were bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and political and security situation in the region.

The Republic of Serbia has participated in the work of the SEDM Conferences of since 2006. The first as observers, and at last year's ministerial meeting in Sofia, the Republic of Serbia was officially promoted to a full member.
