The Serbian Armed Forces in multinational operations



During 2010, the members of the Army of Serbia participated in the planning, organization and the conducting of nine international exercises, cooperating with officers and soldiers from 40 countries worldwide.

The Serbian army ha gained much valuable experience in such exercises Command Staff and practical field operations are linked.

In the period 27 June-2 July this year, the exercise TISA 2010 was held, with the members of the Serbian Army and the armed forces of Romania and Hungary practicing the procedures of providing assistance to the civilian population in the wake of Tisa overflowing in Tisa and Caras rivers inways. The exercise involved the 24 members of our Armed Forces.

At the training ground "Babadag in Romania, in June and July 2010 year, 36 members of the Army of Serbia, with their colleagues from the armed forces of Romania and the United States, performed the exercise "SABER DAWN 2010. The main topic was training and performing combat tasks at the section level.

In September, the Serbian Army took part in the exercises "EURADA 2010", in Allensteig in Austria. On that occasion, 14 of our members gained new experience of contingency response and crisis management operations. The exercises involved members of eight European countries.

Members of the Serbian Army and participated in international exercise "Combined Endeavor 2010", held in Gravenwer in Germany, from 1 to 17 September. It is the largest military exercises in the field of IT security in the world. The importance of the exercise can be seen in the fact that as many as 1400 members from 38 NATO member states took part in the exercise, as well as PfP and other countries in Europe and Asia, and more than 1200 tests in interoperability between participating countries were conducted, with 32 members of SAF taking part.

At the test site "Sabla" in Bulgaria, 60 of SAF members, with colleagues from the armed forces of Bulgaria, carried out a joint exercise in live shooting firing of air defense units, in September 2010. It was the first battlefield live shooting of air targets for the past two decades, and as such is of paramount importance to the operational capabilities of the 250th air defense missile brigade and air force and air defense of the Serbian Army.

In October 2010, the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia will take part in carrying out activities "SEESIM 2010 (South Eastern Europe Simulation 2010), with partners from 13 countries as members of SEDM (Southeastern Europe Defense Ministerial Process), the United States and two countries that have the status of observers. SEESIM exercises are organized every two years and are a sophisticated way of practicing at the national and regional level, by real-time simulation.

The exercises are organized to promote cooperation, coordination and interoperability of SEDM member states in eliminating the consequences caused by natural disasters, crisis management, combating terrorism, border security and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. During the exercises information is checked between national and international organizations and institutions in real-time, with the procedures being determined and practiced to enable better flow of information, which also boosts rapid response systems.

At the exercise "SEESIM 2010", besides the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Serbia the following institutions will also participate: the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Public Administration and Local Government, civil defense headquarters and the Serbian Red Cross.

In early November, the Republic of Serbia will organize bilateral military exercise "BACKA 2010", with the armed forces of Hungary.

Members of the Army of Serbia, in the future, will participate in exercises "Eurasian STAR 2010" in Turkey, "VIKING 11 in Sweden.

The importance of participation of the Serbian Armed Forces in international exercises is multifaceted. First of all, it is important to understanding the level of interoperability with the armed forces of other countries, learn about their tactics and procedures, tools, equipment and weapons.

Also, these exercises can further enable national bodies to manage crises. In this segment, the objectives are to promote interoperability for prevention and fight against terrorism and organized crime, and improving crisis management capability in the border zone.

Participation in international exercises is an ideal opportunity to prepare and practice of the Army of Serbia to participate in multinational operations of the United Nations. The experience gained during the execution of international exercises are used when developing plans and training programs for units that will be deployed in multinational operations.

International exercises are also an opportunity for training work in a multinational environment and improvement of foreign language.
