President Vučić attends annual briefing on status and capabilities of Serbian Armed Forces in 2025
Today, the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić, attended a briefing held at the Guard Club in Topčider, where he was presented with the results of an annual analysis of the status, operational, and functional capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces in 2025.
The meeting, chaired by the Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, was also attended by Prime Minister Đuro Macut and Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić. During the briefing, President Vučić noted that this is the most important annual meeting to assess the operational capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as the status of war reserves – from footwear and uniforms to munitions.
- We are analysing weapons and equipment needed for the period ahead and reviewing security situation in the country and in the region. I must say I am quite satisfied with the results achieved by the Serbian Armed Forces. I think citizens of Serbia will be able to understand this from the following numbers – Serbia allocates a record 2.65% of GDP to defence and security, even slightly more, though not in the most direct way. What is interesting is that a significant portion of this large budget is directed toward investment – 54.1%, while 32.5 % covers personnel costs, and the remainder operational expenses. I think this clearly shows how much we invest in our armed forces. It is important that we preserve peace and the only way to do that is by deterring any potential attacks on our country – President Vučić said.
He stressed that there is significant concern regarding the formation of military alliances in the region against Serbia.- In line with this, we are acting responsibly and seriously, without provoking anyone, while seeking to deter any potential aggression against our country. The defence capabilities of our Air Force and Air Defence have been significantly increased, and they will be further strengthened in the years ahead in all services and branches of our armed forces – the President of Serbia said.
Speaking about the conclusions reached at today’s meeting regarding war reserves, President Vučić said that stock levels are high. He said that the Power of Unity 2025 military parade had been evaluated very positively, as well as the professionalism and responsibility demonstrated by members of the Serbian Armed Forces over the past year. He added that the briefing had also addressed plans to increase the number of personnel in special operations and other units, as well as the formation of new ones. Attention was also given to the matter of the reintroduction of mandatory military service.
- We discussed military service, the proposed 75-day period. Decisions will be made soon. The question is whether the system would be officially introduced in December or March, but in any case, we will make that decision within the next month or two and submit it to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, so that in September or October the registration of individuals eligible for military duty can begin - President Vučić said. The President was also briefed on the execution of tasks assigned after last year’s annual analysis of the status and capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces, the factors that had decisive impact on the development of capabilities over the past year, and further steps to be undertaken in 2026.
At today’s briefing, the security situation in Serbia and in the region was reviewed, along with the conditions in which the capabilities of the Serbian Armed Forces have been developed, the status of units, and the overall operational and functional capabilities. The priorities of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces were also identified for the current year, as well as medium-term priorities. The briefing was attended by Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, Police Director General Dragan Vasiljević, Chairman of the Parliamentary Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Milovan Drecun, Chairman of the Parliamentary Security Services Control Committee Igor Bečić, Secretary General to the President of the Republic Suzana Paunović, and members of the collegiums of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff.
