Minister Gašić meets with Belgian Minister of Defence
Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met with the Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Belgium, Theo Francken, in Belgrade today.
Minister Gašić thanked Minister Francken for his visit to Serbia and for the opportunity to exchange views on the political and security situation in the region, as well as on possible avenues of establishing defence cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and the Kingdom of Belgium.During the meeting, he emphasized that the Republic of Serbia is committed to military neutrality and will continue to develop and improve relations with other countries and military-political alliances, in line with its own interests and with the aim of strengthening regional and national security.
Speaking about the situation in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, the Minister of Defence highlighted the security threat posed by the process of transforming the so-called Kosovo Security Force into the so-called Kosovo Armed Forces, stressing that such a process constitutes a serious violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 and the Military Technical Agreement. Minister Gašić emphasized the importance of the Belgian Armed Forces returning to the KFOR mission, noting that this would provide additional guarantees for the safety and continued presence of the Serbian population in the southern Serbian province. He noted that Serbia will remain committed to dialogue and the peaceful resolution of all issues and underscored the importance of the continued, impartial implementation of KFOR’s mandate in full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.
During the meeting, the two sides agreed that there is a strong potential for establishing bilateral defence cooperation, in the interest of both countries.
The Belgian Minister of Defence expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet and hold a pragmatic discussion about topics contributing to the strengthening of cooperation between Serbia and Belgium, as well as about concrete initiatives aimed at further enhancing that cooperation.
