Intensive training on modernized IFVs

Serbian Armed Forces mechanized units are conducting intensive training on M-80 AB1/V2  infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), whose manoeuvrability, fire capabilities, and armour protection have been improved through the modernization process.
Vehicle crews and dismounted mechanized squads are going through all components of practical training — from preparation for mission execution, camouflage, application of tactical procedures during movement and combat, to the maintenance of all sub-systems and weapon systems of the combat vehicle.

As stated by the commander of the 37th Mechanized Battalion, Lt. Col. Milan Kuburić, the unit has recently been equipped, in accordance with the equipment plan, with the modernized M-80 AB1/V2 infantry vehicle, which has substantially improved the battalion’s operational capabilities.
   — One of the key training priorities in 2026 for the 37th Mechanized Battalion is training on modernized assets. In addition to modernized IFVs, the unit has received M-20 modular submachine guns, and the receipt process for M-19 modular assault rifles is currently underway. The quality and reliability of these weapons will be tested during the execution of a tactical live-fire exercise in February this year, said Lt. Col. Kuburić.

The commander of the mechanized company, Captain 1st Class Milenko Stepančević, says that with the installation of a remotely controlled weapon station, replacing the previous mechanically operated turret, the gunner-operator’s position with his instruments has been relocated from the turret to the hull of the vehicle.
   — A 30 mm automatic grenade launcher has been installed, while the existing cannon and coupled machine gun configuration has been retained. The modernized IFV is now capable of employing the Malyutka anti-tank guided missile with semi-automatic guidance, whereas the original version allowed only manual guidance. The addition of ballistic plates to the hull has enhanced protection, the running gear has also been improved, and the relocation of fuel tank, along with the installation of a hydraulic ramp in place of the former doors, has enabled faster and safer dismounting.  Overall, the combat vehicle is easier and safer to operate, and its combat capabilities have been significantly improved — said Captain Stepančević.

According to Lance Corporal Dušan Milenković, a gunner operator of the M-80 AB1/V2 IFV, the level of responsibility has increased, but the vehicle’s capabilities are now far greater than those of the original variant.
   — My experience from the training conducted so far shows that we are equipped with a modern and powerful system which, as far as my role is concerned, provides entirely new work experience and operational capabilities. We are still mastering all the capabilities of the M-80AB1/V2 infantry fighting vehicle, and I am confident that we will confirm the characteristics of the modernized combat vehicle during exercises – LCpl Milenković stated.

Members of the 3rd Army Brigade are now facing upcoming tactical exercises and live-fire drills, where they are expected to demonstrate their readiness to carry out tactical and fire missions in both offensive and defensive operations.
Along with tank units, mechanized battalions are the main manoeuvre elements in Army operations, and their personnel train throughout the year in all weather conditions. This ensures a required level of individual proficiency, team effectiveness, and speed of response, which, along with reliable combat vehicles, are essential for the rapid commitment of forces to battle, effective fire support and the protection of Serbian Armed Forces personnel.
