National Security Council meeting held

The President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić, chaired a meeting of the National Security Council, held today at the General Secretariat of the President of the Republic of Serbia.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić and the Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović.

Today’s meeting focused on three main topics: regional military and political security, with an overview of the situation in Europe and worldwide, energy security and the overall security of the Republic of Serbia, and the recent U.S. operation in Venezuela.

President Vučić stressed that the state and military leadership is fully aware of the complexity of Serbia’s position in Southeast Europe. He noted that this complexity is likely to increase, particularly in light of the collapse of the old world order, the growing disregard for rules, the erosion of international law, and the fact that the United Nations framework exists only on paper.
- We are particularly concerned over the continued arming of Priština, contrary to the United Nations Charter and contrary to UNSC Resolution 1244, which has been suspended de facto, though not de jure. It has been suspended de facto by major Western powers and certain regional actors. Priština is being rapidly armed, and a particular threat to Serbia’s security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty comes from the newly formed alliance between Priština, Tirana, and Zagreb. This cooperation includes a wide range of activities, including the joint development of complex combat systems, from 4x4 vehicles to plans for more powerful systems and armaments in the future – the President said.

He noted that Serbia is preparing to defend itself against those who openly threaten it, and expressed confidence that the nations’ strength will prove to be a sufficient deterrent, necessary to achieve the primary goal - preserving peace and stability in Serbia.
- We have discussed ways to further reinforce our special units with personnel, weapons and equipment. Additional investments will be made in our defence industry, and we have made new decisions on how to replenish our food, water, and ammunition reserves. They will have to be maintained at a much higher level. As you know, we have more than enough fuel to support our armed forces, including our Air Force, Army, and the River Flotilla. Our military capability will be significantly enhanced in the coming period. I would say that over the next year and a half, we will almost double our military capability, which is no small task, considering that our military is no longer small and weak as it was until 2015. Even though we are already much stronger, in the next year and a half, we plan to increase our personnel by around 30 percent and our overall strength and firepower by 100 percent - President Vučić said. He explained that part of the weapons and equipment will be produced domestically, while the rest will be procured internationally. He emphasized that “this is the only sure way to protect our country in the future and the only true deterrent”.

The President noted that one of the key conclusions of today’s National Security Council meeting, based on the example of Venezuela, is that we must rely on ourselves.
- It is our task to be ready and fully prepared. You’ve seen our military on parade, now imagine that in just a year and a half our military capability will be twice as big, especially in terms of modern weaponry. Then it becomes clear what we have already acquired and what new equipment we are currently procuring. We have also discussed increasing the number of personnel in our special units. I am proud of our special units – the 72nd Special Operations Brigade, the 63rd Parachute Brigade and the Kobre MP Detachment. We are working on improving their working and living conditions. Staffing levels in all three units are good, but they must be excellent. To be fully staffed, 700 to 800 new members must be admitted to these units in the coming period – President Vučić said.

He added that Serbia safeguards peace, while attacking no one. However, it possesses significant deterrent capability.
- We have also discussed other details of our national defence doctrine. People do not need to worry, they can sleep peacefully – our military is a strong deterrent, and at this moment there is no threat from any potential aggressor. That does not mean there will not be a threat in a few months or a year, and we must be prepared for that. I am telling you this so you understand that our strength is clearly greater and more powerful than any potential aggressor’s, and it is highly unlikely that anyone would dare embark on such an adventure – President Vučić said.
