Defence Minister’s message on Veterans’ Day
Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić has sent the following message on the occasion of December 4 – Veterans’ Day:
“I extend my warmest congratulations to all veterans on December 4 – Veterans’ Day.
Throughout the history of warfare in our region, veterans have left behind a legacy of numerous victories and made an outstanding contribution to the history of Serbia. Today, thanks to you, our veterans, we take pride in all the national values you fought for and secured, while also remembering our soldiers and heroes who defended our homeland and opened the gates of freedom, the thing sacred to the Serbian people and citizens of Serbia. Following the tradition of the warriors of the Royal Serbian Army, you bear witness today that the memory of our ancestors is not merely a part of the past, but a living legacy reminding us of the strength of our national spirit.
Through their participation in the wars of liberation, veterans have demonstrated unwavering faith in justice and loyalty to the homeland. Through your sacrifice and perseverance, you have preserved the honour and freedom of our country. Your deeds stand as a living example to younger generations, demonstrating that love for Serbia is expressed through a readiness to defend its values.
Today, we remember with deep respect and gratitude all those who laid the foundations of Serbia’s statehood by sacrificing their lives. Their heroic deeds and your perseverance remind us that freedom was fought for, and that safeguarding it is the lasting duty of every generation. Thanks to you, who are still here, and to those who, sadly, are no longer with us, we live in a free country. It is therefore our responsibility to honour their memory, to pay tribute to the brave soldiers and heroes who fought in every war and military campaign for Serbia’s liberation, and to show care and support for our veterans in every sphere of life and work.
I congratulate you on your anniversary, with the hope that Serbia, thanks to your sacrifices and the example you have set, will always remain strong, proud, and free. I have faith in the strength of our people, and I am confident that the members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces will continue to safeguard the values you defended and passed on to future generations.”
