Training on self-propelled artillery systems
Intensive training of professional personnel in the combat use of 122 mm self-propelled howitzers is underway in the Serbian Armed Forces’ artillery battalions armed with these artillery systems.
On training ranges, the crews are improving team coordination in executing collective tasks and further enhancing their overall ability to provide fire support to the Army’s evolution units. In accordance with the training programme, this phase involves practising marching and emplacement procedures, as well as procedures for preparing and executing indirect artillery fire and delivering sudden, effective, and concentrated artillery fire against targets at varying distances.
The training is using an upgraded variant of the self-propelled howitzer, which, following the integration of a modern fire-control system, provides increased firepower, greater speed and accuracy of fire, and a significantly improved fire effect. This training cycle will conclude with tactical exercises and live-fire drills that will test the howitzer crews’ ability to carry out specific tasks in winter, when snow and muddy terrain make reconnaissance, selecting and camouflaging firing positions and calculating firing data much more difficult.
Cadets studying the Artillery module at the Military Academy, trained alongside the professional personnel of the self-propelled howitzer artillery battalions, focusing on the timely deployment of artillery units into combat and the coordination of artillery fire. These specialized training programmes, conducted within Serbian Armed Forces units and institutions, are a mandatory part of the Military Academy curriculum. They allow cadets to build on the knowledge gained at the Academy and gain practical experience that will fully prepare them for their initial duties as officers.
