Minister Gašić Attends “Power and Influence of Women in Development of Security Sector” Conference

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić attended today the opening ceremony for the international conference of the Network of Women in the Police titled The Power and Influence of Women in the Development of the Security Sector held at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade.
At the conference opening, the audience was first addressed by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Đuro Macut, who emphasized the importance of the role of women in the security sector. He underlined that insistence upon greater and more meaningful participation of women in this sector is not a matter of ideology, but of strategy, which the Network of Women in the Police reminds us of every day, as does the European Network of Policewomen, an organization chaired by a woman from Serbia. He noted that the work of this organization is a good example of how the principles of women’s empowerment can be successfully translated into concrete results that help strengthen the line ministry. He added that for this reason, the Serbian Government’s support for such organizations is a strategic and significant decision aimed at enhancing the role of women within the security structures.
Among the speakers who addressed the conference participants were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Ivica Dačić, Minister of Justice Nenad Vujić, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran, and Social Affairs Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, and Minister without Portfolio responsible for gender equality, prevention of violence against women, and the economic and political empowerment of women, Tatjana Macura. Speakers at the conference opening also included the UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Serbia, Yakup Beris, Rector of the University of Criminal Investigation and Police Studies, Prof. Zoran Đurđević, and the President of the Serbian Network of Women in the Police and the European Network of Policewomen, Police Colonel Katarina Tomašević.
The conference brought together security sector leaders from across the region and Europe. Discussions focused on challenges and opportunities for increasing women’s participation in leadership roles, gender equality within the security sector, strategies for improving the status of women, the role of women in uniformed services, as well as in the modern security sector in both global and regional contexts. During the conference, participants exchanged knowledge and experiences relating to the role and contribution of women in developing the security sector, while also strengthening international cooperation.

The Network of Women in the Police is an association established in 2018 to promote the role, status, and significance of women serving as police officers within the Ministry of the Interior.
The conference was organized by the association the Network of Women in the Police of the Ministry of the Interior, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
