Minister laid wreaths in Thessaloniki



Serbian Defence Minister Dragan Sutanovac laid today in order to mark the 92nd anniversary of the breakthrough of the Thessalonica front, at Serbian military cemetery in Thessalonica, and the cemetery where they the Allied soldiers were laid to rest

On the Serbian military cemetery in Thessaloniki, 21,000 were buried, some 7,000 Serbs, out of whom the remains of more than 5,500 were buried in the crypt beneath the monument, and 1440 in the cemetery.

Wreaths at the Serbian and Allied military cemeteries were laid by representatives of embassies and military representatives of France, Britain and Italy, representatives of the city of Thessaloniki, Serbian associations that cherish the tradition of battles from the First World War and the Association of Greek soldiers from the First World War.

Minister Sutanovac will attend the ceremony in Polikastro marking the anniversary of the breakthrough of the Thessalonica front, which will be held at the monument erected in 1968 in honor of the great Allied victory there.

The front was broken through in an attack which started on 15 September 1918, while the strategic breakthrough of the Serbian army in Vardar started on 20 September.

After 45 days of operation, involving about 150,000 Serbian soldiers, on 1 November Belgrade was liberated, and with the breakthrough of the Thessalonica Front first Bulgaria (29 September), followed by Turkey (October 30) surrendered while the Austro-Hungary proclaimed defeat on 3 November and Germany on 11th.
