Minister Gašić attends ceremony marking 81st anniversary of liberation of Belgrade

Today, Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić attended a central state ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War, held at the Liberators of Belgrade Memorial Park.
The state ceremony was led by Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran, and Social Affairs Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski.

The Minister of Defence, accompanied by Brigadier General Prof. Boban Đorović and Colonel Nikola Matović laid a wreath at the Monument to the Liberators of Belgrade.

After the national anthems of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Serbia, Minister Gašić paid his respects at the Eternal Flame Monument, and laid a wreath at the Monument to a Red Army Soldier.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, the Minister of Defence wrote the following message in the memorial book:

“After nearly four years of occupation marked by darkness that fascism brought not only to Belgrade and Yugoslavia, but to all of Europe, an awakening from the most horrible nightmare came – liberation!

Thanks to their spiritual strength and unwavering will, the Serbian people remained undefeated, despite numerous attempts over centuries to subdue them. Many have left an indelible mark on our history through their actions, but none as profoundly as the liberators of Belgrade.
More than eighty years ago, united with their allies and fellow fighters, they defended human dignity and restored long-awaited freedom to our capital and its citizens.

You were and remain the pride of Serbia, a part of the legacy obliging us to preserve freedom and brotherhood, as well as the alliance forged a long time ago.

Rest in peace, knowing that you wrote the history of the victors. Eternal glory and gratitude to you all! Long live Serbia!”
At today’s ceremony, wreaths were also laid by representatives of the City of Belgrade, the Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars (SUBNOR) of Serbia and Belgrade, officials from the embassies of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Russia to Serbia, as well as representatives of veterans associations that uphold the traditions of national liberation wars.

Members of the Yugoslav People’s Liberation Army, aided by the Red Army troops, liberated the capital of Yugoslavia on October 20, 1944, thus ending the four-year occupation.
