Conference held to mark anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325

A two-day international conference titled From Adoption to Implementation – 25 years of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 in Practice was held today at the Central Military Club in Belgrade.
The conference was hosted by the Ministry of Defence as part of its two-year chairmanship of the Women Leaders in Security and Defence Sector project. The event was officially opened by Acting Assistant Minister for Human Resources, Siniša Radović. In his opening remarks, he underscored the significance of this resolution, emphasizing that Serbia recognizes and supports the role of women in all processes related to peace and security.

- Today, women are an equal part of our security sector and a key factor in ensuring peace and stability.  In the face of numerous contemporary challenges, risks, and threats, women have clearly shown and proven, through their distinct perspectives and solutions, that they significantly contribute to building and sustaining peace – said Assistant Minister Radović.

He emphasized that Serbia remains committed to its European path and democratic values, and will continue to promote peace, cooperation, and the equal participation of women in building and maintaining peace.
- We should ensure continuity of gatherings like this. Our international cooperation on gender equality gives us an opportunity to share experiences, learn from best practices, and work together to overcome challenges. It reflects our joint commitment to building a society that fully embraces the principles of democracy, inclusion, and equality – said Assistant Minister Radović.

The importance of this conference and Serbia’s progress in implementing Resolution 1325 through national action plans were spoken about by Minister without Portfolio in charge of gender equality, prevention of violence against women, and economic and political empowerment of women, Tatjana Macura, Acting Assistant Minister of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue in charge of anti-discrimination policy and advancement of gender equality, Simona Popović, and UN Women Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia, Belén Sanz Luque.
This year’s conference focused on the exchange of international and regional experiences in the implementation of UNSCR 1325, strengthening partnerships, and reinforcement of society’s commitment to ensuring women’s equal participation in building peace, security, and stability. Other topics included the implementation, activities, and outcomes of the national action plans in local communities.

The conference concluded with a formal handover of the chairmanship to the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Moldova.
The conference was attended by prominent representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, as well as panellists and participants from both Serbia and abroad.
