Remembrance Day marked at Jajinci Memorial Park

A delegation from the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces attended today a state ceremony commemorating Remembrance Day for the Suffering of Serbs, Roma, and Jews in the Second World War, held at the Jajinci Memorial Park.
The state ceremony was led by Miloš Vučević, acting as the representative of the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić. Accompanied by the Honour Guard and the national anthem, Vučević paid tribute to the victims of this infamous execution site by laying a wreath at the monument dedicated to them.

Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Vučević emphasized that the Jajinci execution site symbolizes the history of bloodshed and suffering endured by all nations.

- The occupiers, in their brutality, wiped out an entire city at this very place and that must never be forgotten. The majority of those executed were Serbian farmers, workers, students, schoolchildren, innocent sons and daughters of an oppressed homeland. Prisoners were brought in en masse from Banjica, Topovske šupe, and Sajmište concentration camps, and many other places. Behind the grim historical facts and statistics lies something that can never be expressed in numbers, the horror and tragedy experienced by a nation, by families, and by individuals – Vučević emphasized.
The commemoration began with a memorial service officiated by Bishop Tikhon of Moravia, Vicar of Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, together with Serbian Orthodox Church clergy. This was followed by a prayer for the Serbian, Roma, and Jewish victims.

The state ceremony was attended by representatives of the National Assembly, government ministers, members of the Serbian Orthodox Church, officials from the City of Belgrade and the Municipality of Voždovac, as well as members of the diplomatic and military diplomatic corps. Wreaths were also laid by representatives of the Association of Concentration Camp Prisoners, the National Council of the Roma National Minority, the Federation of Jewish Communities, Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia (SUBNOR), war veterans, survivors of the camps, and descendants of the victims.
The commemoration at the Jajinci Memorial Park honours the memory of the tens of thousands of Serbs, Roma, and Jews, as well as members of the People’s Liberation Movement and other anti-fascists, who were killed during World War II. The memorial park, which includes a monument to the victims, was opened on October 20, 1964, to mark the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade by partisan forces.
