34th anniversary of Major Milan Tepić’s death commemorated

A wreath-laying ceremony was held today at the Monument to People’s Hero Milan Tepić, in the street bearing his name in Belgrade, to mark the 34th anniversary of his death.
The commemoration was organized by the Government’s Committee for Nurturing the Traditions of the Liberation Wars of Serbia, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces. The event was led by the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran, and Social Affairs, Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski.

A delegation from the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, led by Brigadier General Ivan Krulj, Commander of the 608th Logistics Base, laid a wreath at the monument. Wreaths were also laid by the members of the hero’s family, veteran organizations, citizen associations committed to preserving the traditions of the liberation wars of Serbia, representatives of the City of Belgrade, and members of the public.
A memorial service at the site was conducted by Major Predrag Dokić, Chief Military Chaplain of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff.

Milan Tepić was born in 1957 in the village of Komlenac near Kozarska Dubica. He died on September 29, 1991, in Bedenik near Nova Rača. Refusing to allow enemy troops to seize a weapons depot, which the enemy could use against his soldiers, Major Tepić chose to sacrifice his life by detonating the depot, killing himself and around ten enemy soldiers. The monument honouring Milan Tepić was unveiled on September 29, 2017, marking the 26th anniversary of his death.
On November 19, 1991, he was posthumously awarded the Order of the People’s Hero of Yugoslavia by the Presidency of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, for “an exceptional act of heroism in combat during the enemy attack on the Yugoslav People’s Army barracks in Bjelovar.” He was officially declared a People’s Hero of Yugoslavia.
