Serbian Armed Forces observe their Patron Saint’s Day

Today, the Serbian Armed Forces solemnly observed their Patron Saint’s Day – Saint Despot Stefan the Tall – holding ceremonies across commands, units and military institutions. On this occasion, the Divine Hierarchical Liturgy was celebrated at the Church of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Mark in Belgrade, and a festive lunch was hosted at the Guard Club in Topčider, attended by the Minister of Defence, Bratislav Gašić.
Minister Gašić offered his best wishes for the Patron Saint’s Day to the Chief of the General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, and all members of the armed forces, expressing hope that they will continue to be inspired by the virtues and strength of their heavenly protector. He encouraged them to carry on the proud tradition, always aware of their sacred duty - to safeguard peace and freedom.

The host of the celebration, Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, extended his congratulations to members of the Serbian Armed Forces and all citizens observing Saint Despot Stefan Day. He emphasized that by observing their Patron Saint’s Day, the Serbian Armed Forces continue to uphold spiritual and national values, reinforce their moral strength, and honour their tradition and identity.
The Divine Hierarchical Liturgy was celebrated by His Eminence Vicar Bishop Dositej of Lipljan, who also serves as the Military Bishop, in concelebration with the clergy. During the service, he passed on greetings and best wishes from His Holiness Porfirije, Serbian Patriarch, to the members of the Serbian Armed Forces for their Patron Saint’s Day.

After reading the Holy Gospel, Bishop Dositej delivered a sermon in which he reminded every soldier that their duty is not only to defend the borders but also to uphold the truth, to serve not just the people but also God. He emphasized that Saint Sefan teaches us that military honour is greatest when consecrated by faith.
The Serbian Armed Forces have been celebrating their Patron Saint’s Day since 2023, following the decision of the Holy Council of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church to designate Saint Stefan the Tall as their patron saint. Saint Sefan is remembered as a wise statesman, a successful military leader, a strong guardian of his people, and, after his death, a miracle worker.
