Meeting between Minister Gašić and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić met today with the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy, Mr David Baker, to discuss strengthening bilateral military cooperation.
At today’s meeting, the Minister of Defence emphasized that the issue of Kosovo and Metohija must be addressed strictly within the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244. He underscored that, in accordance with this resolution, KFOR remains the only legitimate armed presence in the province, and that Kosovo and Metohija are an inalienable part of the Republic of Serbia.

Minister Gašić stated that the Republic of Serbia is committed to initiating a strategic dialogue with the United States, and emphasized that the Ministry of Defence intends to support this initiative within the scope of its competencies.

According to Minister Gašić, the decision by the Serbian Government to exempt certain exercises with the United States Armed Forces from the moratorium on joint exercises with foreign partners reflects the significance Serbia places on military cooperation with the United States. He also expressed his appreciation for the U.S. support in organizing Exercise Platinum Wolf 25, which was conducted last month.
He emphasized that the cooperation that the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces maintain with the Ohio National Guard within the State Partnership Program, represents one of the key pillars of successful bilateral military cooperation between the two countries.

Minister Gašić also stated that Serbia remains committed to participating in the peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula as part of the U.S. contingent.

The meeting also included discussions on military-technical and military-economic cooperation between Serbia and the United States.
Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense David Baker stated that the United States highly values its partnership with Serbia and the latter’s commitment to dialogue and cooperation. He affirmed that efforts to enhance military cooperation in areas of mutual interest will continue.
