The Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović, participated in the Balkan Countries Chiefs of Defence Conference in Istanbul today. The theme of the 18h CHODs Conference was "Vision for the Use of Unmanned Systems in the Future Operational Environment", but the meeting provided an opportunity for regional chiefs of defence to discuss other topics and activities aimed at strengthening military-to-military relations and regional security.
In his speech, General Mojsilović said that the Republic of Serbia is committed to further strengthening regional military cooperation and carrying out joint activities as part of this initiative. Speaking about unmanned military systems, the Chief of the General Staff said that “they have dramatically changed the operational environment and created a need to adjust force employment tactics and modify principal combat systems” and added that “it appears that it is only a matter of time before human crews are pushed out of the battlefield, which will create a completely new framework for armed operations to be conducted in”.
During his visit to Istanbul, General Mojsilović had two separate bilateral meetings, one with the Chief of the Turkish General Staff, General Metin Gürak, and the other with the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone. The Balkan Countries Chiefs of Defence Conference was established in 2006 with the aim of strengthening military-to-military cooperation and exploring ways to respond to regional security challenges, risks and threats. The conference brings together Chiefs of Defence of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Serbia, North Macedonia, Türkiye and Montenegro.
Belgrade hosted the Conference in 2009 and 2018, and the next, nineteenth, will be hosted by the Hellenic Republic next year.
