Press release
The Serbian Armed Forces periodically advertise the sale of military working dogs that are certified by veterinary authorities to be unfit for service in the Serbian Armed Forces as guard dogs, protection dogs, search and rescue dogs, and explosives and drug detection dogs. In accordance with the Regulations on Material Management in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, prior to their sale or adoption, the dogs are given a legal status that allows this.
It is important to note that a loss of work ability in a dog does not mean that it cannot be a great pet or a guard dog.
Precisely because we want dogs that are no longer fit for military service to be adopted as pets as soon as possible and spend the rest of their lives surrounded by love and care, they are sold at a symbolic price.
Experience so far shows that citizens are very interested in military dogs and that most of them find new owners very quickly. Many dogs that have lost their capacity to work are adopted by members of the Serbian Armed Forces who have worked with them throughout their working lives or by people close to them who are aware of these animals’ qualities and personalities.
Until they move to their new homes, the dogs are kept at the Dog Training Centre in Niš, where they are cared for by professional trainers, dog handlers and excellent vets. Numerous awards won by our dogs at dog shows in the country and abroad speak volumes about the way they are raised, cared for and trained in the Serbian Armed Forces.
We call on media representatives to refrain from sensationalism and malicious reporting on this topic since it causes unnecessary public unrest.
