At the ceremony, “Verica Ćorluka” Medal was awarded to the nurse of the year, Tanja Ignjatović, head nurse at the Clinic for Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and was presented to her by State Secretary Mile Jelić.  The medal was established in honour of Colonel Verica Ćorluka, a former MMA head nurse, who is most responsible for what the nursing profession looks like today.
In addition to the Nurse of the Year Award, letters of appreciation were presented to retired head nurses by the Head of the MMA’s Treatment Sector, Colonel Đorđe Taušan, M.D., and awards were presented to employees and associates by the Head of the Military Medical Academy, Colonel Nenad Perišić, M.D.-Ph.D.

The Head of the Military Medical Academy extended his congratulations on the Nurses Day, saying that on this day we should remember the importance of military nurses and technicians to military healthcare, and that teamwork, involving nurses and doctors working together, is a prerequisite for successful treatment of patients and building the culture of health across the society.
- The challenging experience of the COVID19 pandemic has shown how important the role of nurses is in the treatment of critically ill patients. I can rightly say that nurses made the greatest sacrifice at that time, and some unfortunately lost their lives providing care to the critically ill - said Colonel Perišić, citing examples from the history of the Serbian army of great people, such as Nadežda Petrović, who bravely stood by their people, taking care of the seriously ill.
International Nurses Day has been celebrated on May 12 since 1974, in honour of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing as a recognized profession, who was born on that day.
