Official event commemorating Victory Day held in National Theatre

An official event commemorating Victory over Fascism Day was held tonight in the National Theatre in Belgrade.
The event was attended by the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, Prime Minister Đuro Macut, President of the Provincial Government Maja Gojković, government ministers, Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff Gen. Milan Mojsilović, members of the collegiums of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff, representatives of religious communities, diplomats, World War II veterans and numerous guests.
Addressing the audience, the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs and President of the Government Committee for Cultivating the Tradition of the Liberation Wars of Serbia, Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski, said that our ancestors’ struggle was a patriotic struggle for the survival of the state and nation.
- It is, therefore, our duty to remember, out of respect for the past and out of concern for future generations, that evil can only be defeated through unity. The Europe of today rests on Serbia’s courage, on our sacrifice, and on our ancestors’ honour. Perhaps it is time to remind ourselves and others of that. May 9, 1945, marked the end of the war, but also of a nightmare that must never happen to us again. Due to that, Victory Day is more than a holiday, it is a boundary line between light and darkness - said Minister Đurđević Stamenkovski, adding that we do not have the right to forget, because without truth there is no justice, and without freedom there is no state and no man.

According to the President of the Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia (SUBNOR), General Ljubiša Diković (retd), Victory over Fascism Day - May 9, is one of the most significant dates in the “freedom-loving part of the world”.
- One of the most significant dates in our homeland, Serbia, especially this year when we mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over fascism in the National Liberation War against the Axis powers, which were led by Germany, Italy and Japan. We have shown the world and ourselves that we are worthy successors to our ancestors from Cer, Kolubara, Kaymakchalan, Kozara... Fascism was defeated 80 years ago, but it has not disappeared. We must enjoy freedom and build peace, so that there are no more monuments, bar the existing ones, that will remind us of victims and suffering, and we must defeat the oblivion of our greatest enemy today – said the President of SUBNOR, Diković, adding that the victims who died defending the homeland in the liberation wars should never be forgotten.

The event, organized by the Government Committee for Cultivating the Tradition of the Liberation Wars of Serbia, included musical and dramatic performances.
Victory over Fascism Day (May 9), which is a national holiday in Serbia, was celebrated through a series of events held in the capital to commemorate the unconditional surrender of Germany, which ended the Second World War in Europe.
