Message from the Minister of Defence on the occasion of Guard Day

Minister of Defence Bratislav Gašić has sent a message on the occasion of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard Day - May 6. The message reads as follows:

“I extend my congratulations to all members of the Guard as they celebrate May 6  - Guard Day.

On St. George's Day, back in 1830, by order of Prince Miloš Obrenović of Serbia, young men were selected "from big and well-to-do families, by stature and reputation, to be members of his Guard”, forming a unit of distinguished young men, whose successors today are members of the Serbian Armed Forces Guard.

The Guard, which follows a tradition spanning almost two centuries, is a symbol of honour, loyalty, and professionalism in serving the homeland. Continuing the tradition of their glorious predecessors who participated in the liberation wars of Serbia, members of the Guard have made an immeasurable contribution to the development and reputation of the Serbian Armed Forces through their work, knowledge, and dedication.

Over the past period, you have confirmed your reputation as an elite unit, successfully performing a series of demanding tasks of national importance. You have improved military protocol for formal occasions involving the state and military leaderships, thus contributing to the reputation of both the Armed Forces and the Republic of Serbia. Your work results have been rewarded with numerous awards and decorations, and I can proudly say that only the best units of the Serbian Armed Forces can be awarded these national decorations.

Congratulations on the 195th anniversary of your unit. I am confident that in the coming period you will continue to carry out the tasks entrusted to you with the same zeal and equally responsibly, keeping your standards high, as is rightly expected of members of the Guard."
