Minister Vučević Lays Wreath at Saint George Church in Oplenac to Mark Statehood Day

Envoy of the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces Aleksandar Vučić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Miloš Vučević laid a wreath today at the tomb of Vozhd Karađorđe in the Saint George Church in Oplenac, on the occasion of marking the Statehood Day of Serbia.

Prime Minister of the Republika Srpska Radovan Višković also laid a wreath, as well as delegations from the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces, local self-governments and Karađorđević family.

The wreath laying ceremony was preceded by the memorial service served by Bishop of Šumadija Jovan with priests.

On the occasion of the greatest state and national holiday, members of the Serbian Armed Forces participated in paying military honours at numerous events and wreath laying ceremonies held all over Serbia.

The Statehood Day of Serbia is a state holiday which marks two significant historical dates. On that day, in 1804, Serbian rebels led by Karađorđe, at an assembly in Orašac, decided to start the First Serbian Uprising. On the same date in 1835, the first Constitution of Serbia was passed in Kragujevac, also known as Candlemas Constitution.
