Minister Vučević Meets Chief of General Staff of the Army of North Macedonia General Gjurchinovski

Today, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Vučević met Chief of General Staff of the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia Lieutenant General Vasko Gjurchinovski, who is paying and official visit to the Republic of Serbia.

At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Vučević welcomed General Gjurchinovski pointing out that maintaining and further strengthening of our bilateral and neighbourly relations requires dedication and good will of the both sides. He added that such and similar meetings were the best indicator and a path to achieving that goal. He stressed that the “Open Balkan” initiative is an excellent form of cooperation among the regional countries and of strengthening of internal ties.

The minister of defence conveyed concern about the current developments in the area of the southern Serbian province and the position of the Serbian people in the north of Kosovo and Metohija. In addition, he expressed his belief that the negotiations on the normalisation of relations would become more complex following the recent escalation of conflicts. Minister Vučević positively evaluated the presence of members of the Army of the Republic of North Macedonia within KFOR, having in mind that KFOR is the sole guarantor of security for the Serbian population in Kosovo and Metohija.

The minister of defence emphasised that the visit also presented an opportunity to consider modalities at a strategic level that are of significance for the continuation of the successful defence cooperation, and to exchange views on the politico-security situation in the Western Balkan region.

General Gjurchinovski thanked Minister Vučević for the opportunity to have a conversation with him about the topics of interest for both sides concerning the defence cooperation. He especially underlined the good cooperation carried out in the previous period in the field of military medicine and military education, adding that those joint activities contributed to the overall relations between the two countries. General Gjurchinovski highlighted the importance of the recent participation of Serbian Armed Forces Air Force and Air Defence members in the air show held in Skopje, which had been rather noted.
