New issue of “Odbrana”

The September issue of "Odbrana" magazine opens with an overview of the most important activities carried out by the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces during the month of August. Our interviewee in this issue’s INTERVIEW WITH A CAUSE is the Bishop of Lipjan and Military Bishop Dositej (Radivojević) Hilandarac. Thanks to his experience of living by the rules of the military hierarchy, this former military officer’s novitiate in the Hilandar Monastery was shorter than it usually is, and recently, after almost two decades spent in the holiest place for the Serbs, he has been appointed as the archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church in charge of the military.
We have dedicated the STANDING POINT column to the upcoming 11th International Arms and Military Equipment Fair "Partner 2023" and the Global Firepower (GFP) list, which has ranked countries since 2006 according to their ability to wage conventional wars. Our country currently ranks 58th and holds a leading position among the countries of the former Yugoslavia.

The SYSTEM column abounds in interesting topics. We visited members of the Mixed Artillery Brigade in Niš as the unit celebrated its anniversary (the Unit Day) and Artillery Day. We have also visited the Logistics Training Centre and the CBRN Centre in Kruševac, as well as the Military Complex "Peskovi".

We have written several times about the members of the 310th Engineer Battalion in Prokuplje because of their continuous efforts to assist the people in need. Senior Sergeant I Class Petar Ilić and Corporal Boban Radosavljević added another glorious page to the history of humanity when they saved the life of a drowning man in the Toplica River on July 18.

The GLOBAL column is dedicated to space. The great powers have been competing for it for a long time now, but the modern space race has somewhat different goals than 60 years ago - now we are talking about colonization, exploitation.

This issue’s CULTURE section contains several texts. To mark the “Stanislav Binički” Day, we have presented this Defence Ministry’s art ensemble subordinate to the Public Relations Department. We have also remembered the writer, translator and academician David Albahari, who has recently died, and looking back at an interview published earlier, we have recalled what is hidden behind the darkness, the wall and the snow in his works. The book “Bismarck's War: The Franco-Prussian War and The Making of Modern Europe” by Rachel Chrastil gives a new reading of history. It is a must-read for those who want to know how Europe was shaped by the war - from the first to the last beat of the war.

Numerous competitions are advertised in this issue of the magazine.
