Military Academy cadets on “Victory of Freedom” memorial parade

The Liberation of Belgrade in World War II is being marked today with a series of events, with members of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces participating.
An honour platoon comprised of the Military Academy cadets led the “Victory of Freedom” memorial parade, from the Moskva Hotel at the Terazije Square to the Republic Square. Twenty cadets were carrying the flags of the brigades which had participated in the liberation of Belgrade, from the Military Museum’s collection.

During the city stroll, a military vehicle’s loudspeakers broadcast the radio drama “Free Belgrade”, based on a text by Milovan Vitezović, which reconstructs the events and circumstances around the liberation of Serbia's capital and includes the broadcasts by Moscow, London and Belgrade radio stations.

The parade, featuring representatives of the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces, the Union of War Veterans of the National Liberation Wars of Serbia (SUBNOR) and the city of Belgrade, ended at the Republic Square, where the "Days of Freedom" event continued with a musical stage performance entitled "Song of Freedom".
After several days of fierce combat, members of the Yugoslav People’s Liberation Army, supported by the Red Army, liberated the capital of Yugoslavia on October 20, 1944, thus ending the German occupation of the city which lasted for 1.287 days, during which a large number of citizens of Belgrade were killed and the city suffered serious damage.
