Serbian Armed Forces Team Ready for Participation in Atalanta Operation



This week, a tactical exercise “Pirate 2022” was carried out at the anchorage point “Ušće” in Belgrade, to test the combat capabilities of Serbian Armed Forces team to participate in the Military operation of the European Union Naval Forces “Atalanta”.

The exercise is a part of standard preparation of Serbian Armed Forces teams for the protection of vessels transporting food to ports at the Horn of Africa within the United Nations programme to fight famine in Somalia, which are protected by forces deployed to this European Union operation.
 
At the exercise, personnel of twelve-member team from the Military Police Detachment for Special Purposes “Kobras” demonstrated excellent competence, showing that they are fully ready for the protection of vessels against pirate attacks and other threats to security in the waters of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.
 
The control of regularity of actions and observance of international standards of training that the unit is expected to achieve was carried out by an evaluation team from the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces.

The Serbian Armed Forces have been participating in the military operation “Atalanta” since April 2012, by deploying staff officers to the force command on board and in the Operational command of the mission on land, and since December 2013, by periodical engagement of autonomous teams for vessel protection, in line with the mission requirements and in agreement with partners from the European Union.
