Send-off ceremony for Serbian contingent departing to UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon

A send-off ceremony was held today in the “Ribnica” barracks in Kraljevo for the new Serbian contingent departing to the UN peacekeeping operation in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The Serbian contingent, that will be part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon for the next six months, includes a Second Army Brigade’s infantry company, staff officers and a national support element.  They will be engaged in important tasks of maintaining peace in UNIFIL’ area of operations in Lebanon and thus continue the long tradition of our troops’ participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations, which began 65 years ago in the same region.

The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Chief of the Serbian Armed Forces General Staff, Lieutenant General Petar Cvetković, who handed over the national flag to the infantry company commander, Major Dobrica Veličković, expressing belief that this contingent will diligently and responsibly perform the assigned tasks, represent the Serbian Armed Forces with dignity and build good relations with all actors in Lebanon.
The participation of members of the Serbian Armed Forces in this peacekeeping operation began on December 21, 2010. In addition to the infantry company, which will perform its tasks as part of the Spanish battalion, staff officers and national support element in Sector East, one Serbian force protection platoon is also deployed in Sector West as part of the Italian contingent.
