Training of the members of the pyrotechnical service

The training for pyrotechnicians of SAF and MoD to enable them to use modern equipment for demining will start on Monday, 2nd November until 29 November at Nis air field. During this time alone the Italian MoD sent equipment for safe removal of remaining mines and for training military professionals.

On this occasion, a meeting was held today in Nis which was attended by the Head of the Continegncy Situations Department Milan Popadic, Deputy Army Commander Brig. Gen. Vidoje Zivkovic and Brig. Gen. Mauricio de Vicentis, Italina DA accredited in Serbia.

Italy and Serbia are very close not only in geographical terms but in terms of ethics, which is why the MoD of Italy wished to realize a project of the Center for Demining. A team of our instructors will spend a month in Nis and I am certain that, in addition to passing down their skills and knowledge to SAF members, they will have the opportunity to get to know the town of Nis and its culture.

Milan POpadic, Head of the Contingency Department, underlined that the members of this service faced the most challenging situations on daily basis, that of, removing the remaining lethal mines. Our pyrotechnicians would be trained by the most experienced of experts of the Italian army, which, as Popadic remarked, would significantly improve the capacities for demining.

On the other hand, Nis will become a center for response in such situations as forest fires, and devastating earthquakes in Serbia and the region, as its geostrategic positions enables it to become such a center. Regional countries are interested in its becoming this kind of a regional center, too.

As Brig. Gen. Vidoje Zivkovic, Deputy Army Commander, said there is remaining unexploded ordnance in the territory of Serbia in the period 1912-1999. SAF members wil take part in it seeing that they have already had experience in such jobs, and on this occasion he extended an invitation to the Italian army commander to come visit Nis during his scheduled visit to Serbia to see for himself the training of SAF.
