Statement
Two pilots of the Air Force and Air Defence of the Serbian Armed Forces were killed today at around 9:10 am in the crash of a MiG-21 aircraft in the area of the village of Brasina near Mali Zvornik, while performing their tasks. After informing all members of the two pilots’ families, the Ministry of Defence will inform the public about the names of the pilots.
Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vulin, Chief of the General Staff General Milan Mojsilović, Commander of the Air Force and Air Defence, Major General Duško Žarković, and the Commander of the 204th Air Brigade, Colonel Brane Krnjajic, went to the scene of the tragedy and talked to eyewitnesses.
After an investigation carried out by both civilian and military authorities, Chief of the General Staff formed an Accident Investigation Commission presided over by the Head of the Development and Equipping Department, Brigadier General Milan Popović, and the Commander of the Air Force and Air Defence formed an expert commission to determine the cause of the crash presided over by the Chief of Staff of the AF and AD Command, Brigadier General Aleksandar Bjelic.
Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces, Aleksandar Vučić, the Minister of Defence, Aleksandar Vulin, and the Chief of the General Staff, General Milan Mojsilović sent telegrams of condolences to the families of the killed pilots.
The MiG-21 aircraft was inspected before take-off, in accordance with all procedures, and after the inspection it was determined that it was in good working order and ready for flight.
