Sutanovac meets with the Spanish defense minister

Minister of Defense Dragan Sutanovac met today with the Spanish defense minister Carme Chacon Piqueras. This is the second meeting of the two defense ministers this year and another confirmation of the good relations of the two countries as Sutanovac remarked. He said that today’s talks focused on the future cooperation, stressing that Spain had extensive experience in the area of defense and in peace operations.

Sutanovac reminded that Spain was a country which intensively supported European integrations of our country, and especially singled out the current issue of visa liberalization and unfreezing of Interim Trade Agreement with EU.

The Serbian defense minister said that as of 1 January 2010 Spain would take over the chair over the European Union and would expect it to continue providing support to the integrations of our country during its presidency.

-Several months ago we signed an agreement in the area of defense in Madrid followed by the realization of joint activities, education, exercises and training, said Sutanovac reminding that the Spanish air force had had a very prominent presentation and performance at the recently held air show in Batajnica air field.

In his press statement, the minister of defense of Serbia said that Spain was a country with a powerful influence in NATO and expressed his expectations that this would help Serbia achieve full cooperation with the alliance within the Partnership of Peace Program, which, as he said, should benefit our country greatly as well as other signatories of the program.

Minister thanked his Spanish counterpart for a very committed and principled position of her state regarding the illegal declaration of Kosovo’s independence.

Minister Carme Chacon Piqueras stated in her press statement that Spain supported Serbia in its efforts to stabilize relations in the Balkans and with respect to European integrations. Chacon said that she expected the start of the implementation of the Stabilization and accession agreement soon enough, hoping that Serbia would be awarded the status of EU candidate son. She once again reiterated that Serbia as well as the whole of Balkans belonged in the European Union, and she also voiced her support to the cooperation of Serbia with NATO as well as its participation in PfP, and in international peace operations.
