Free medical examinations on the occasion of the Day of the Military Medical Academy

The Military Healthcare Department and the Military Medical Academy organized traditional free specialist medical examinations on the occasion of 2nd March – the Day of the Military Medical Academy.

All interested citizens, regardless of their health insurance type, had the opportunity to do three types of preventive specialist medical checkups whose purpose was early detection of breast cancer, malignant melanoma, as well as measuring bone density.

According to Colonel Dejan Jovanović, MD from the Radiology Institute of the MMA, the largest number of female patients has undergone mammographic screening – a gold standard in breast cancer detection - for the first time today.

As he pointed out, regular checkups include ultrasound scans, while a mammogram is usually recommended in the cases when some changes are suspected. One patient's examination today revealed a suspected malignancy, which confirms the statistics that in one out of ten patients examined changes are detected which require further examinations.

Nada Milnović (b. 1966) from Belgrade was one of the patients who scheduled a mammogram yesterday morning. She said she was quite satisfied with the service and screening provided at the Military Medical Academy, an institution she has a lot of confidence in, and she is trying, as a civilian health insurance beneficiary, to do a number of examinations at this military health institution.

All the MMA rheumatologists participated in the free examinations providing osteodensitometry test which accurately measures bone strength and determines osteopenia and osteoporosis. This examination is recommended to women above 65 years of age, but also in the cases where there are risk factors such as genetic predisposition, diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, certain kidney diseases, etc. Osteoporosis was determined in about 30 per cent of examined patients and they were given instructions for further treatment.

As a part of the traditional birthday practice, MMA has planned examinations of 90 citizens, most of which specialist dermatological examinations. The Head of MMA’s Dermatovenerology Clinic Prof. Dr Lidija Kandolf Sekulović, pointed out that suspicious changes were detected in two patients examined today and they were referred for further treatment.  Pointing out the importance of timely detection of melanoma, she reminded the citizens that preventive mole checkups can be done throughout the year.
