Latest issue of ODBRANA



Report on the recent visit of the delegation of defense industry of Serbia to Iraq.. the delegation was headed by Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac who signed a cooperation agreement with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Kadir Hasim. The cooperation agreement, besides training, also includes the sale of arms and military equipment to Iraq. According to the words of Minister Sutanovac our defense system could provide both training and exercises to Iraqi security forces, while at the same time offering to Minister Hasim that Iraqi cadets be educated at our military academy.

Main topic of this issue is improving the physical training in SAF. After conducting complex analysis, it became obvious that the physical training, that is, psychological and physical training were not at the desired level and in line with the established standards of professionalizing. That is why SAF GS adopted a set of decisions and measures for reaching physical capability. These measures will become effective on 1 September, while the first results are expected as early as the end of the year.

Special supplement “ARSENAL” number 32 is dedicated to modern weapons and military equipment. We single out texts on UMP 45 automatic rifle of the renowned German firm Heckler and Koch, reconnaissance planes MIG 21 and hand grenades.

We present you another SAF unit-Central logistics which has been organized in such a way as to be able to become a reliable logistics pillar and an institution within SAF and MoD.

This issue includes the story of the Military Geographical Institute, where the experts of this institution managed to adapt the existing data on space they gathered for years to new technologies and to digitalized them. This is of great importance especially for the making of digitalized topographic maps, which make a very important precondition of more effective and quality based functioning of the defense system and SAF.

Ninth “School of friendship” organized by a humanitarian organization “Nasa Srbija” (Our Serbia) gathered 400 children from all over Serbia this year, especially from Serbian enclaves on Kosovo and Metohija and Republika Srpska. The participants in the program of psychosocial support are the children of killed, kidnapped and missing persons in the recent civil wars and of socially endangered families. The attendants of the school were also visited by the President of the Republic of Serbia Borsi Tadic. In his welcome address, he pointed out that they should advance themselves on daily basis in order to useful both to themselves and the society in the future.


From this issue on we publish the article series on Milutin Milankovic which was ranked as top five scientists of XX century, while UNESCO declared 2009 to be his year.

The story on marking 65th anniversary of rescuing allied pilots in WWII is accompanied by a story on Haliard operation, one of the greatest evacuation actions in grounding allied pilots in occupied Europe. Thanks to Serbs and the Yugoslav Army in the period from august 1944 to February 1945 almost 600 airmen were transferred to American bases in Italy.

We have also registered the feet of the sports mountaineering society Kopaonik who have recently reached Elbrus summit, the highest summit in Europe and the pilgrimage of Military Grammar School students on Athos-the summit of Orthodox Christianity.

We have also published five ads for employing 125 medical workers in medical institutions in Belgrade, Nis and Novi Sad.
