Spanish and Serbian defense chiefs meet

The Defense Chief of the Spanish Forces Jose Julio Rodriguez Fernandez is paying a two-day visit to the Republic of Serbia and SAF. Offical talks were held today at SAF GS complex with LTG Miloje Miletic, SAF GS Chief, where the current political security situation in the region was discussed.

General Fernandez reiterated Spain’s principled stance regarding the unilateral declaration of Kosovo’s independence, providing another reassurance by mentioning the Spanish Government’s recent decision on retreating the members of Spanish forces from KFOR.

With respect to improving the bilateral military cooperation, the signing of the Defense Cooperation Agreement between Serbia and Spain is of great significance, as it represents a legal framework for making further cooperation operational. As both sides agreed there was still room for cooperation in many fields in the defense system, and in light of that, it has been agreed that as early as fall this year the expert team should meet to define concrete activities for the next year. Both delegations’ share the view that training, education and exchange of experiences should be the main fields of cooperation.
General Fernandez will be visiting 250th rocket brigade. Another possibility for successful cooperation is seen in the field of Special Forces.
