Development of defence cooperation between Serbia and Burundi

Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin has met today in Belgrade with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Burundi, Ezechiel Nibigira.

Minister Vulin thanked for the withdrawal of Burundi's decision to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called Kosovo and emphasised that he highly appreciates the principled support of Burundi in defending the principles of international law and preserving the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia regarding the so-called Kosovo.

Also, the minister of defence stressed that Serbia strongly condemns the transformation of the Kosovo Security Forces into the so-called Kosovo Army proclaimed by the Interim Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina on 14th December last year. Minister Vulin said that the decision was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, according to which Serbia perceives KFOR as the only guarantor of security in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija.

At the meeting, it was also said that Serbia and Burundi should establish cooperation in the field of defence and that a cooperation agreement should be concluded. In this regard, the ministers Vulin and Nibigira agreed that it is very important to establish and develop cooperation in the field of defence, bearing in mind that the bilateral relations of the two countries are extremely friendly and without any open issues.
