Minister Vulin: Serbia worthy of memory of ancestors

Minister of Defense Aleksandar Vulin and Minister of Justice Nela Kuburović along with the representatives of the institutions that participated in the implementation of the “A Tree for a Warrior” Project planted trees in front of the building of the Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade today.
The project, which has been running since 2014, ends with this ceremonial planting, as part of marking the centenary of the First World War. To date, the symbolic 1.300.000 trees have been planted, which equals the number of inhabitants Serbia has lost in the First World War.

As Minister Vulin pointed out, the terrible loss Serbia suffered in the First World War deserve remembrance “and it is a great sin that all the previous generations did not even list all the names."

- 100 years have passed, and we still do not know the names of our ancestors who have given lives for the freedom of us all and the freedom of our homeland. This is a commendable initiative by the Ministry of Justice, a well thought action to demonstrate how precious the memory of our ancestors is to us and what Serbia needs to be like to be worthy of their memory – a better, safer, healthier Serbia in which all its citizens are equal is the Serbia worthy of the memory of our ancestors.

Serbia respects its laws, respects its system, and we are all proud of the organization and society in which we live, said Minister Vulin, adding that “this is a small and modest contribution of the Ministry of Defense to the memory of our ancestors, but non the less, we are proud to have participated in this great initiative, where the entire society demonstrated great humanity and the manner to commemorate and remember those who are worth remembering and who came before us.”

Minister Kuburović emphasized that thanks to the agreement signed by the Ministry of Justice with the Faculty of Forestry and the Public Enterprise “Srbijašume”, it was possible to run “A Tree for a Warrior” Project for four years and to end it at the time of marking 100 years since the end of the Great War and armistice signing.

- The goal was to remember all those who had fallen in the liberation of Serbia and recall the great battles of the First World War. That is why the afforestation of parts of Serbia related to these locations was done. Planting started at Cer and that is where it ends. Another added value of the Project is environmental protection, raising the awareness of the citizens, rehabilitation of numerous landslides; and we have been planting in more than 250 locations throughout our country. I would especially like to point out one of the reasons why the Ministry of Justice has taken participation in this Project – that is the re-socialization of the convicted persons, as they were the ones who took part in this project, said the Minister of Justice.

Director of Public Enterprise "Srbijašume" Igor Braunović thanked all who participated in the “A Tree for a Warrior” Project, recalling the great sacrifices “which Serbia has laid down for peace and freedom throughout history” and added that “the future times demands that we preserve this memory.”

Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ratko Ristić, emphasized that it is a great honor that the noble Project “A Tree for a Warrior" ends today in front of this faculty. As he pointed out, it is an exceptional initiative and a great contribution to protecting the environment, motivating and encouraging citizens to do something for their country and the memory of the ancestors.
