President Vučić: Re-introduction of mandatory military service for men is being considered

Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces and President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić who, accompanied by Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin, has attended today the test flight of two MiG-29 planes procured from the Russian Federation at the Batajnica Airport, said that the idea under consideration is to bring back conscription in the year 2020/21.

According to him, it will depend on the Defence Ministry's assessment, but also on the available financial resources, whether the tour of duty would last for three or six months.

- I think that one-year period of service would be too long. But, we are still thinking, I will not promise anything about it, President Vučić emphasized, adding that investment in military education has also been planned.

President Vučić emphasized that all aspects regarding this decision are currently under consideration, as well as by what year and how it would be implemented, adding that military service would give the men who served an advantage when applying for public sector jobs.

He also pointed out that he is aware that when it comes to re-introduction of a compulsory military service, many will say “you wish to wage wars again”, and that until now there were also those who advocated the position of why there is no conscription, because our children “became wimps”.

- We are doing our best to preserve peace, to be strong enough, preventively acting against anyone who would attempt to carry out any form of aggression against the Republic of Serbia - President Vučić said.
