International Army Games commence
An opening ceremony for the International Army Games, one of the largest military sports competitions in the world, took place at the Patriot Culture and Leisure Centre, not far from the Russian capital, yesterday. Teams from 32 countries will take part in 28 disciplines, while members of the Serbian Armed Forces will participate in three disciplines - Tank Biathlon, Sniper Frontier and Engineering Formula.
Russian Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu declared the Games officially open.The military sports cotest, which will last until 11th August, will be held in the territory of seven countries - Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Kazakhstan, Iran and Armenia.
In the most popular discipline at the Games - Tank Biathlon, 21 members of our team will start competition at the Alabino training ground in the Moscow region, today. Biathlon is a competition in which crews of armored personnel carriers have the task of crossing a certain distance in a short time, properly overcoming several anti-tank obstacles and destroying certain targets with cannon, a couped machine gun and an anti-aircraft machine gun.
The nine-member team of the Serbian Armed Forces participates in the discipline of the Sniper Frontier in Belarus, not far from Minsk, and in the town of Volozhinsk, near Volgograd, our team of 18 members will test strength in the discipline Engineering Formula.
The competition in Belarus includes four stages - from individual to phase sniper pairs and then there is a possibility that representatives of one country compete among themselves.The Engineering Formula discipline involves the use of engineering machines for clearing obstacles, dozers, backhoes and a floating conveyor.
International military games are among the largest and best organised military and sports championships in the world, and the concept was originally designed by Russian Defence Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.
Yesterday, in the competition ground, the Friendship House was open where the participating countries have their own showrooms in which they represent their cultural and historical sites. In addition to the numerous guests and military personnel of the participating countries, the Serbian booth was also visited by the Ambassador of the Republic of Serbia to Moscow, Slavenko Terzić.
