Marked 200 Years of Karađorđe’s Death



The official ceremony to mark 200 years of death of the leader of the First Serbian Uprising, Karađorđe Petrović, was held today at Oplenac.

The ceremony started with laying wreaths, and continued by occasional artistic programme. The ceremony was attended by Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Zoran Đorđević. In his address to the present he said that the leader of the Uprising, Karađorđe had not lived to see free Serbia, but he had built himself in the foundations of the Serbian state.

The representatives of the Ministry of Defence and Serbian Armed Forces also laid the wreaths at the sarcophagus of Grand Leader Karađorđe as well as the representatives of Topola municipality and the associations of citizens that foster the tradition of liberation wars in Serbia.

Grand Leader Karađorđe was killed on this day in 1817 near Velika Plana in Radovanje woods.
