Debate on the occasion of the Day of the Slavic Writing and Culture

On the occasion of the Day of the Slavic Writing and Culture the debate organized by Mensa Serbia and the Serbian Cultural Assembly “Despot Stefan Lazarevic“ was held tonight at the Faculty of Law in Belgrade. The debate, where Milo Lompar, Professor at the Faculty of Philology and Milos Kovic, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Philosophy talked, was attended by the Defence Minister Zoran Djordjevic, students of Belgrade University, professors and other guests.

The debate stressed that although we live in the period of culture negligence, which is not even “the privilege of the elite”, the interest for the event and lectures indicates the necessity to have a greater number of such events and the hope was expressed that this one would turn into tradition. In his lecture Mr. Milos Kovic reflected on the elements of our national identity from the Slavic period through Saint Sava’s days and the Kosovo Testament to modern Serbia whereas Professor Lompar talked about consequences of Vuk Karadzic reform, Novi Sad Agreement and the importance of Cyrillic.

The Day of the Slavic Writing and Culture is marked in the memory of the enlightenment activities of Saints Cyril and Methodius among Slavs.
