The Day of Kobras, special purpose battalion, marked



In the "General Jovan Miskovic" barracks at the Military Academy today the Day of the Military Police Battalion (for special purpose) "Cobra", a day when the first anti-terrorist unit of our Army was established.

This date is celebrated to commemorate the day when in the Department of antiterrorist operations of 282nd Military Police Battalion - the first anti-terrorist units of our Army was formed.

The celebration was attended by Defence Minister Dragan Sutanovac, Minister of Justice in the Government of Serbia Snezana Malovic Serbian Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant-General Ljubisa Dikovic, state secretary in the Ministry of Defence, deputy ministers, members of the Ministry of Defense, the Army of Serbia and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

On this occasion the “Cobra” Military Police Battalion of special purpose displayed arms and the techniques applied in battling and securing a person.

Defence Minister expressed his satisfaction today with members of the "Cobra" because he had been working with them since the first day of his coming to the post.

- We did not come to see your demonstration exercise, but to talk with you and hear what is necessary to perform your job in today's world when there is so much conflict between those who break the law and those who make and enforce laws, that it is necessary to make progress every day, not only physically but also in technical and technological means as the Minister said adding that this type of work requires investments given that the battalion provides security services to the highest state leadership, and therefore has the greatest degree of responsibility.

- Given the present moment n which the state is curbing organized crime in an unprecedented way, it is no accident that we have the Minister of Justice today with us as you provide her security as well, since there are those who want to endanger the lives of people who fight against crime, the minister said, adding that "Cobras" protect him and the Chief of Staff, including Minister of Justice, which speaks of confidence in that unit.

Sutanovac also said that he is familiar with the problems Battalion of special purpose, is facing with and that he was aware of the fact that the budget provided for the defense system is less than in 2008.

- Thanks to responsible planning I believe we can make great progress in your unit and military police which execute large and complex tasks at present and will execute them in time to come. I am pleased to have with us here today those who retired from your unit. I think friendship with members of the unit is essential not just during work, but even longer as the minister said, stressing that they can contribute to the exchange of experiences, obtaining important information and convey knowledge to young people who come to the unit.

Congratulating the holiday, the defense minister said it is very important to for the member of Cobras to give their maximum, to be vigilant at all times and respect the procedure, be innovative when necessary, while at the same time aware that we live at a time in which we do not know when problems can occur.

Commander of the "Cobras’ special task battalion Colonel Viktor Dobric presented the gift to the defense minister in appreciation for the cooperation.

- The unit has performed all its tasks professionally and responsibly and it is our intention to do so in the future as well, as we have always been the pride of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Army, said Lt. Col. Dobric and explained that the battalion "Cobra" had a 34 year long tradition and it is the oldest anti-terrorist unit in the country and abroad.

"Cobras" are an elite unit of our army directly subordinated to the Military Police whicgh performs the most responsible tasks in the field of security protecting the most important state and military leaders, securing state and military delegations, performs anti terrorist protection of certain persons and other military police tasks.
