The General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces celebrates its Patron Saint’s Day, St. George’s Day

Patron Saint’s Day of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, the Feast of the Holy Martyr George, was celebrated today in the religious service facility at the „Banjica 2“ barracks in Belgrade, in the presence of the Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vulin, the Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces, General Milan Mojsilović and the Board Members of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff.

The celebration of St. George’s Day began with the Divine Liturgy, served by the Chief of Chaplains, Lieutenant Colonel Slađan Vlajić, followed by the rite of consecration of the ritual gifts and the breaking of the ritual bread.

The envoy of the President of the Republic and the Supreme Commander of the Serbian Armed Forces and the Minister of Defence, Aleksandar Vulin, congratulated all the members of the General Staff on St. George’s Day on behalf of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and on his own behalf, wishing them to celebrate it for a long time in health and harmony.

In his sermon, the Chief of Chaplains, Lieutenant Colonel Vlajić, referred to our ancestors who celebrated Patron Saint’s Day even in the most difficult times, stressing that it is an example that should be followed.

 - Patriarch Pavle said "What should we be afraid of, if we are with God? And if there is no God, what should we hope for?" By consecrating these ritual gifts today, by breaking the ritual bread, we have shown that we too can celebrate Patron Saint’s Day in the most difficult times when our people and our military are exposed to the plague that has taken over the whole world. May God bless and protect the Serbian Armed Forces, our state and our people - said Lieutenant Colonel Vlajić.

Patron Saints’ Days have been celebrated in the Serbian Armed Forces since 1888, and until the end of World War II, they were celebrated in units. Following the example of our famous ancestors, after a decades-long break, by the Decision of the Minister of Defence in 2017, the tradition of celebrating Patron Saints’ Days in the Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces was resumed in 2018.
