Making of the film "Serbia in the Great War"

Снимање филма „Србија у Великом рату"At the mixed shooting ground “Pasuljanske livade”, during the past four days, scenes of combat actions of the Serbian Military at the Salonika front were filmed for the live-action/documentary film and series “Serbia in the First World War”.

The film by Sladjana Zaric is realized in cooperation of the Radio Television of Serbia and the Ministry of Defence’s Military Film Center “Zastava Film”. The film and series will display the most dramatic events during the Battle of Kajmakcalan, the Battle of Gornicevo, and living on the front line and setting off to breakthrough. All the scenes are based on true events of warriors, as described in books or war journals.

At “Pasuljanske livade”, the Battle of Cer, Kolubara, withdrawal over Albania and life of soldiers at the Salonika Front are dramatized.

According to the author, the project represents a chronology of the Great War, which is a demanding undertaking, since it encompasses the period of four years. One of the ideas behind it was to educate the public on the First World War.

- The film is going to be very didactic in nature. I would like to make this thematic more appealing for the young people who know little of it. The goal is to, with attractive scenes and presentation of those territories, show the audience what it looked like in the time of their predecessors. We shot the path that the Serbian Military passed during its withdrawal and recorded how it used to look a whole century ago. We went to Corfu, Kajmakcalan and Dobro Polje – the place where the Salonika Front was breached – Sladjana Zaric said. She added that the cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Armed Forces of Serbia and MFC “Zastava Film” had already become a tradition, getting better with time.

- We were given great support by the Third Army Brigade and the Special Brigade, whose members gave their best while playing the role of soldiers in the War. They performed difficult scenes without any problems, and successfully portraying what it used to look like 100 years ago. The scenes are not the products of imagination, but of a rather realistic image – the author said.

Deputy Director of MFC “Zastava film” Major Goran Ikonic pointed out that the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Serbia participate in several projects on the occasion of marking the centenary of the beginning of the Forst World War.

- This project is highly important, considering the fact that our military is a successor of tradition of the glorious Serbian Military from Cer, Corfu and Kajmakcalan. Shooting at “Pasuljanske livade” represents the second stage of this project. The first one was shooting abroad, which was conducted by the RTS team, and the last one will be shooting near Belgrade – Major Ikonic said.

Снимање филма „Србија у Великом рату"Director Ivana Stevens explained that reconstructing battles of the First World War had been incredibly demanding and that what helped the authors were relevant literature, military consultants and historians.

Film’s producers are Snezana Rodic Sindjelic and Dobrivoje Ilic, Petar Vujanic is in charge of photography, Biljana Mihajlovic – costume designer, Snezana Popovic – stage designer, and Ivan Mijatovic and Slobodan Djukic are military consultants. The premiere of the live/action/documentary film and series “Serbia in the Great War” will be held in a few months.
