Military cooperation with Hungary

Delegation of the Ministry of Defence of Hungary led by Peter Gila, Acting Chief of the Department for International Military Cooperation, paid a two-day visit to Serbia for the purpose of holding regular bilateral defence consultations.

Colonel Milan Konjikovac, Acting Chief of the Department for International Military Cooperation, and Gila assessed that the bilateral military cooperation between the two ministries is intense and constantly growing. Despite the difficulties in financing, activities of the international military cooperation in 2013, quantity and quality of the conducted activities indicate that Hungary is one of the major partners of the Republic of Serbia in the region in the field of defence. The focus of the current cooperation was on the joint involvement in multinational operations and joint participation in military exercises that contribute to improving the operational capabilities of the two armies.

During the talks, Colonel Konjikovac said that the two countries show a remarkable level of cooperation by their joint participation in multinational operation UNFICYP in Cyprus, assessing that the Republic of Serbia in this way sends a clear message that it is a reliable partner in the preservation of peace and stability. Colonel Konjikovac introduced Mr Gila to the commitment of the Republic of Serbia to increase the number of members in multinational operations, as well as the results of the reform of the defence system. He thanked for the professional engagement of the members of the Hungarian Armed Forces in KFOR, which significantly contributes to security in Kosovo and Metohija.

Gila indicated the willingness of Hungary to share the experiences in terms of security and defence aspects of joining the European Union, as well as involvement within its Common Security and Defence Policy. He expressed expectation that the planned visits of the Minister of Defence and Chief of General Staff of Hungary to Serbia would significantly contribute to the intensification of cooperation, stressing that participation in joint exercises, such as IRON CAT, NEIGHBOURS, CAPABLE LOGISTICIAN, represents the crown of cooperation between the two armies.

At the end of the talks they signed Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan between the Ministries of Defence of Serbia and Hungary for 2014.
