Sergeant First Class Darko Sili in UN mission in Congo

Sergeant First Class Darko Sili of 224 Centre for Electronic Warfare from August 2012. until August 2013 was deployed as staff non-commissioned officer in the United Nations Mission in the Republic of Congo. Assigned to duties in the eastern regional command in Goma on the border with Rwanda and Uganda, as the only member of the Serbian Army , the biggest challenge he faced in the early days of travel on the African continent was the language barrier .

- Working in an international environment is interesting and very challenging because every one of us require additional effort to perform the task better as a team - says Sergeant Sili , adding that also had to be on constant guard against tropical diseases that are present in that part of the world.

Talking about impressions of the mission , he turned his attention to an event that marked the end of 2012. when the city where he was stationed was captured by rebel forces and soldiers who have deserted the regular army of Kongo and joined the fugitive general.

- It was one of the biggest challenges I encountered, the situation was very tense, because we are the representatives of the United Nations , and they blamed this organization for the current situation in the country . Luckily, the negotiations which lasted ten days ended the crisis , after which the rebel forces withdrew from Goma , and a relatively peace ensued - explains Sergeant Force.

In his own opinion the lavish nature of the Congo was most impressive , which leaves no one indifferent, and also points out that while he was staying at the mission he had a chance to get to know and better understand one country so distant and unfamiliar but otherwise with a very rich culture and traditions of Central Africa.
