Wreaths laid on memorial plaque to fallen Chinese journalists

Defence Minister Alexander Vulin and General Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China, laid wreaths on the memorial plaque at the site of the former Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, in which three Chinese journalists were killed during the NATO bombing and 20 persons were injured. They paid tribute to the victims with a minute of silence.

During the bombing, on 7th May 1999, at 11:45 pm, correspondents Xu Xinghu and Zhu Ying of Guangming Zhibao and journalist Shao Yunhuan of Xinhua news agency were killed.

The embassy was hit by three missiles. The southern part of the building, the last floor, the ground floor and the basement of the western part of the building in New Belgrade were struck – although it was visibly marked as an object of diplomatic importance. Auxiliary buildings in the backyard of the embassy have also been destroyed, while the buildings in close proximity were significantly damaged as well.

The memorial plaque was unveiled at the site of the bombing in 2009, as a symbol of friendship between the two nations, and two years ago, at that site, construction of the Chinese Cultural Centre was started.
