Marking 98th Anniversary of Death of King Peter I
A delegation of the Ministry of Defense and the Serbian Armed Forces laid a wreath at the sarcophagus at Saint George’s Church at Oplenac near Topola at a commemorative procession marking 98th death anniversary of King Peter I.
The state ceremony was led by State Secretary at the Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, Zoran Antić.
In addition to state and military honors, wreaths were laid at the sarcophagus by representatives of the Municipality of Topola, the “King Peter the First” Endowment, as well as citizens’ associations committed to nurturing the traditions of the Serbian liberation wars.The organizer of the state commemorative ceremony is the Government of the Republic of Serbia – Committee for Preserving the Traditions of the Serbian Liberation Wars.
King Peter the First Liberator is one of the most important modern rulers of Serbia. The rule of King Peter the First was marked by the Annexation crisis, the so-called Customs War with the Austro-Hungarians, as well as the Balkan Wars and World War I from which Serbia, following great victories at Kumanovo, Bregalnica, Cer, Kolubara and the Macedonian Front as well as immense human casualties, won her statehood for the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians. King Peter the First died on 16 August 1921 in Belgrade.
