Celebrations of the Day of Strategic Research Institute and Day of Military Archive

Day of Strategic Research Institute and Day of the Military Archive (5th February) were officially celebrated in the barracks “Banjica 2” in the presence of the Rector of the University of Defence, Major General Goran Radovanović, Head of the Military Academy Major General Bojan Zrnić, members of the two institutions and numerous associates and guests.

Congratulating the holiday, General Radovanović pointed out that in the previous year the Strategic Research Institute and Military Archive had made a substantial contribution to the defence system in line with their functional responsibilities.

Director of the Strategic Research Institute, Jovanka Šaranović PhD singled out the most significant results of the work of these two institutions in 2018.

- The project “Assymetric forms of threatening security” is finalised, and the monography, as its final product, is being printed. We have completed the project of the History Division “History of Serbian and Yugoslav military in 19th and 20th century”, and work has been initiated on the project “Strategic culture as a determinant of national security in the function of supporting the concept of military neutrality”, while the work has been continued on the projects “Stress in the military profession” and “Long-term trends in the education of personnel at high educational institutions in defence system” - Dr Jovanka Šaranović said and underscored that the Military Archive had completed a several years long project “Register of the victims of the First World War” and that it had continued a successful implementation of two agreements on cooperation with museums Yad Vashem in Israel and Holocaust Museum in Washington.

The Strategic Research Institute was established in 1984 in the process of transformation of the Centre of High Military Schools of JNA “Maršal Tito” and the Centre for Strategic Research of the General Staff of JNA into a scientific-teaching institution, and the final phase of the transformation was executed in 2006.

The predecessor of the Military Archive was a special (third) division within the Main General Staff, established on 5th February (24th January by the old calendar) in 1876, by a Decree of the Prince Milan Obrenović, which laid the foundation to the first institutionalised work with military history and safeguarding of the entire archives in the Serbian military.
