Wreaths on the occasion of the centenary of the end of the World War I

On the occasion of marking the centenary of the end of World War I, wreaths were laid at the French military cemetery and at the Memorial Ossuary to the defenders of Belgrade at the New Cemetery.

The wreaths were laid at the Memorial Ossuary by Nikola Selaković, envoy of the President of the Republic, Geneviève Darrieussecq, Secretary of State to the Minister for the Armed Forces of the French Republic, Aleksandar Živković, State Secretary of the Serbian Ministry of Defence, US Ambassador Kyle Scott, and Zoran Radojičić, the Mayor of Belgrade.

Previously, Darrieussecq, Radojičić and Zoran Đorđević, Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs, laid wreaths at the French-Serbian cemetery where Secretary of State Geneviève Darrieussecq recalled the friendship of the French-Serbian army.

“I am very happy to be here today for celebrating the 100th anniversary of the liberation of Belgrade after a long, tiresome and exhausting conflict between 1914 and 1918”, Darrieussecq told reporters.

She said she was in Belgrade to talk to Serbian officials about further development of friendship between the two countries.

She reminded that on 11th November, in Paris, 60 officials, including Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, will attend the celebration marking the centenary of the signing of the ceasefire in the World War I and that the leading idea of French President Emmanuel Macron is to take the opportunity on that occasion to talk about peace in the world.

“Vučić’s presence at this conference is very significant”, Darrieussecq said.

She added that President Macron is to come to Serbia in December to confirm the friendship between France and Serbia, and to emphasise the importance of Serbia in the Western Balkans, with which, she says, France is cooperating in all areas.

Bilateral cooperation is very positive, and it should continue, Darrieussecq concluded.
